General Principles
Osteopathy is based on the principle that physical manipulation can help improve joint mobility, relieve muscle tension, and improve blood supply. The techniques used help the body to heal without the use of drugs or surgery. Although we have seen significant improvements in our patients wellbeing, not all osteopathic techniques are based upon the most rigorous scientific evidence. It is therefore important that the osteopaths stay within their field of competence and as such the Footmap clinic only employs osteopaths registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC)
Osteopathic treatments have a high level of success for problems such as:
lower back pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, certain types of neck pain, arthritis, sports injuries, pelvic and hip misalignment and muscle and joint pain.
Treatment Costs/Options
Most people pay for osteopathy treatment privately. Treatment costs vary, but typically range from £35 to £50 for a 30- to 40-minute session.
You don’t need to be referred by your GP to see our osteopath. We charge from £65 per session, however if you see one of our osteopaths at our clinics in Altimus, the first appointment is subsidised by them so it is absolutely FREE. Most private health insurance providers also provide cover for further osteopathic treatment.
Methods Used
Osteopathy is a holistic therapy so on your first visit your osteopath will ask about your medical history and may use their hands to examine areas of tenderness, strain or weakness. There is often a need to remove some clothing from the area being examined. Our Osteopaths will discuss the treatment plan they propose along with any additional tests such as MRI’s or blood tests.
Osteopathy uses articulation, high velocity thrusts, massage and stretching to achieve its goals. It is not usually painful, although you may feel sore or stiff in the first few days after treatment, particularly if you’re having treatment for a painful or inflamed injury. You may also be shown exercise to do at home to prevent symptoms getting worse or returning.
Your practitioner will determine you medical history and analyse your static and dynamic posture.
If appropriate Physical manipulation or massage can begin on the same day.
If appropriate a series of stretching and strengthening exercises will be e-mailed to you to be carried out at home.
You will be asked to reattend the surgery where an analysis will be made on the efficacy of the treatment. A further manipulation may be required.
You will be asked to attend a follow up appointment to continue with the treatment plan.
