Nail Dystrophies

Nail dystrophy may manifest as a misshapen, damaged, infected or discoloured nail that may affects the toenails, fingernails or both.

Our Foot Health Practioners have the training and experience to identify many foot conditions such as verruca’s, fungal infections, ingrowing toenails, pressure lesions’, trachyonychia, parasitic infections, psoriasis, pressure callouses and corns to name but a few. Whether your motivator for foot treatment is nail cosmesis or discomfort our practitioners will be able to help.

During your consultation your Foot health practitioners objective will be to determine the cause of the nail disorder. This could be anything from exogenous factors such as trauma, wetting/drying, chemicals and infection (dermatophytes, yeast or bacteria), or endogenous factors such as decreased nail formation secondary to radiation, toxins, decreased oxygenation, decreased vascularization, metabolic/endocrine disorders, inflammatory disorders and neoplasms

Once the likely cause of the problem is identified, your practitioner will use a method to manage or eradicate the underling problem. We work with a whole raft of specialists so if the condition is beyond our capacity we are happy to be able to refer to other specialists.

Our specialist are able to use a host of techniques and equipment to maximise the chance of a positive outcome from the use of topical preparations to enucleation and debridement to cryotherapy and 1064 nm YAG laser treatment. They will be happy to spend the time to help you decide which treatment is best for you. Our objective is not only to treat the presenting problem in a safe and sterile environment, but to give recommendations of how you can prevent the problem reoccurring. For example a patient might present with Onycolysis , discoloration and onychauis secondary to the trauma of a contracted hammertoe, so although treating the nail dystrophy may be our short term goal, our longer term goal would be to inform the patient about the intimate relationship between the biomechanical cause, the clinical presentation and the treatment options. These options range from buying shoes with deeper toe boxes, orthotics to surgical management of the digital deformity.

At the Footmap clinic we would normally charge £75 for a half hour consultation however if you attend one of our Altimus clinics, Altimus are subsidising this cost so your first consultation will be free.
